East Tennessee Veterans Memorial
Located in the heart of World’s Fair Park in downtown Knoxville, the East Tennessee Veterans Memorial commemorates the service of all East Tennessee’s fallen heroes in 35 counties since World War I. The memorial involved a tremendous amount of attention to detail and quality control with tolerances to 1/32” setting of monuments. Extensive site utilities with in-ground site access lighting, site drainage, sidewalks and a significant landscaping package were all a part of this remarkable project.
Johnson & Galyon’s construction team self-performed the monument foundations, which required a practically flawless level surface in order to erect the marble bases and granite columns. The team also provided the colored concrete throughout the one-acre site. The entire project took place in the middle of World’s Fair Park, adjacent to an active playground. Special attention was paid to the safety of park visitors, as well as traffic flow around the site.
The landscaping included a special USGA Root Zone Sand topsoil trucked in from North Carolina to provide the appropriate bed for sand-grown sod shipped in from South Carolina. This project was awarded the 2008 Knoxville-Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission Excellence Award.
