University of Tennessee Natalie L. Haslam Music Center
The new, four-floor facility that houses the University of Tennessee’s Music Program was constructed in 24 months. The building includes 40 faculty studios, 45 practice rooms, a 420-seat recital hall, band room, choral, orchestra, percussion, and chamber music rehearsal rooms, and administrative offices. This project has been awarded the LEEDS Silver certification as well as the 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA) of East TN Merit Award.
Additionally, approximately two acres of the surrounding site was developed. This included extensive landscaping, sidewalks, stairways, brick cheek walls, concrete retaining walls, pole and bollard lighting, benches bike racks, irrigation and handicap access. Sound isolation and acoustics were key to the success of the project and were executed by our team as designed. Throughout the Music Center, careful measures were taken to ensure that acoustical excellence met both studio and performance standards.
The highly efficient facility includes several green features and systems that are LEED Silver Certified. This includes an underground rainwater collection cistern used to irrigate the surrounding landscape and ceramic glazing on portions of the glass exterior to reduce solar heat gain.
